Well it was windy and I had the day off. The only problem was the north
wind. Simple solution - go to QM where all wind directions should
theoretically be the same. And the drive is short and quick.
When I arrived there were only two people out on the water but gradually
this built up. Getting out from the windward shore was difficult and once
out on the open water it was ridiculously gusty and even with a 6.5 it
wasn't that easy to get planing or stay upwind. Anywhere else I'd have been
on a 5.5 or 4.7.
By mid afternoon the wind picked up and the gusts were monster. It was
almost impossible to keep the board on the water but within seconds you
could be becalmed. There was no way I was going to slog back upwind and
re-rig so I stuck with it and a bit later the wind settled down a bit and I
had quite a few good runs right across the resevoir though I was often in
the "sin bin" or playing cat and mouse with the dredger.
I was gybing consistently, if not prettily, but staying upwind or even
planing was a struggle. My hat is off to anyone who regularly sails here.
It isn't at all easy.
By the end I was pretty much enjoying myself but cramp and dehydration were
setting in so I walked the kit round the reservoir rather than try to faff
around going upwind.
Far from classic but plenty of wind and a change of scenery so, hmmm ....
three stars. Maybe four. No, three.
